ARTISTIC PROCESS

« I have a feeling that lives in me, I close my eyes, I see characters, a position, colors appear. I then let instinct direct my pastels, all curved on the wood, this support that I love so much, which absorbs the pigment according to my desire. The vibrant colors of the chalks marry between transparency and opacity. Blurred with the fingertips or applied raw with a passionate gesture, in order to give more softness or strength to this work that is born before my eyes. When I create, I see the power of the message, but above all the great beauty, the resilience through the eyes of my heroes, they do me so much good…”

BIOGRAPHY

Catherine Blackburn is a self-taught artist born in 1978 in Ste-Claire, Quebec, Canada.

From the age of fourteen, she discovered her soft pastel style during a free course in visual arts. In 1995, she won first prize in an artistic competition in her school board with the work: « The Paper Man ». It is still on display in the main entrance of the Polyvalente St-Anselme.

She uses sophisticated color schemes, with sinuous outlines of contrasting hues. She adds themes surrounding her characters, often graceful women with revealing eyes and towering hair.

Graduated in 1998 in interior design, she started her own business in 1999. The Boutique Inspiration Art-Tech (gifts/coffee/design/architecture) made the young designer known in the Bellechasse region. It was also in 1999 in Ste-Claire that she presented her first solo exhibition « States of Souls », where several of her works found takers.

In 2011, Catherine carried out research to develop a varnished pastel technique on wood. She calls him; crystallized pastel on wood. This new technique inspired him in 2012 to create a collection of side tables. All stemming from its design, it develops its project with various partners in cabinetmaking and ironwork. She launched it at the Salon des Designers d’intérieur de Montréal (SIDIM) in 2013. Her furniture then opened the doors of several art galleries to her in Quebec and in 2018, gave her the title of professional artist at the Conseil Crafts of Quebec (CMAQ).

In 2013, fate struck the artist, who went through the mourning of his love and father of his children. Then, in 2016, his son’s fight against leukemia, which recurred in 2020. He received a bone marrow transplant in 2021 at Ste-Justine Hospital in Montreal and is doing well today. Following these events, the artist uses his ability to create works inspired by his emotions to create the « Emotive » collection still in production. About fifty works and their written inspirations deal with the mourning of a loved one and childhood illness. She wishes to disseminate this project by publishing a book that tells her story, illustrated with her « emotional paintings » and to carry out traveling exhibitions throughout Quebec.

His link with Leucan, an organization helping children with cancer and their families, inspires him to two works; in 2017 « Pur bonheur compté » and in 2018 « La coccinelle de l’espoir », which were sold for the benefit of the organization.

In 2019, Catherine won a competition launched by the City of Cap-Santé with the work « Miroir Fluvial ». Sculpture inspired by a tree trunk recovered from the banks of the city, split open and mounted on a concrete base. The crystallized pastel drawings of festive villagers and the ancestral architecture of Cap-Santé adorn the faces of the open trunk with a mirror effect. The work is installed in 2020, in front of the new Town Hall.
